Had to show off the new Magnaflow muffler I put on my '01 Nissan Xterra, and tell you all my thoughts on it. When I had the Xterra up on a lift changing the tranny fluid, I noticed the muffler was in pretty bad shape. It probably could've gone a while longer, but I got all excited to throw something cool on. I found this sweet lookin shiny Magnaflow on a local classified website for $35! (Barely Used) The guy totalled the jeep he had it on. My wife was very clear that she did not want a LOUD exhaust, and to tell you the truth I didn't want a crazy loud one either. All I wanted was a little nicer sound, and maybe some more horsepower, why not? The Magnaflow is a straight thru exhaust with heavy baffles around a perforated pipe. I was a little worried at first, but I did a little research on the web, and thought I better go ahead with it. Also, my Xterra has two cats and a spark arrester, so I thought it should work out okay. My brother and I cut the old one off, and welded the new one on in a couple of hours. When we started it up, I was so relieved, it sounded great!! Nice and throaty, a little bit of a deep rumble at low rpms, but not offensive at all! When we took it for a cruise, I could tell it felt a little less restricted, but not like a lot more power. I'll have to start keeping track of the mileage to see if it is any better. At cruising and freeway speeds it almost sounds stock. I am very impressed! It's pretty cool, you can actually see the muffler through the wheel well! Fun project!

The other things I've done to the Xterra are putting a matching brush guard on the front with Kc Lights and grill covers, a rear bumper guard on the back, a K&N filter charger kit for cold air intake, BFG All Terrain 31's up front, and BFG Mud Terrain 31's on the back, and I always run full synthetic for added protection for towing.

Thats a good clean look on your mods, not over done, I like it. I also thought about those Magnaflows after seeing commercials fro them and did not want to spend the big bucks for a full Cat back system. Nor do I want a loud truck. I owned a 77 Chevy truck for 15 years and put 660,000 miles on it. It had the 21" Cherry Bombs, I bought a new Super Duty in 02 and fell in love with the quiet ride, then down graded to a new F150 in 05 and kept it quiet. I now have 08 GMC Sierra as my daily driver and an 08 Tahoe as my grocery getter. I recently had my GMC custom tuned by Black Bear Performance, http://blackbearperformance.com
It made a big difference in the trucks characteristics, throttle response, a little more HP. Also brought the Rpms down, I can cruise at 70 at just a little under 2k. I had him drop the torque management down to 50% which will give me a little higher shift point (5950 rpms) and quicker shift, not hard shifting, just quicker. The only other thing I have done to it was add 20" wheels which changed my speedo so I had them adjust that in the tune, now it is dead on with the GPS. It is putting out about 330 HP and I plan on putting on the Cold air kit which should put me close to the 350 HP range for a gas model 5.3 liter.

Very cool! I had a '71 chevelle with dual cherry bomb glass packs, and that sucker was loud! I lived next to a retirement community, and in the winter when I'd start it to warm it up, it blew all those little old people out of their beds!! OOPS! Like I said I am just so impressed with how relatively quiet it is for being a straight thru exhaust, just nice and throaty. 660,000 on a truck is very impressive! Was that custom tune pretty pricey? That sounds way cool! Great rides! I love your rims!

The tune was 250, a little cheaper than a Hypertech tuner which is close to 400. Black Bear will make any adjustments you want free for life. He saves all your previous info on his hard drive for future reference or modifications which I like because I had Hypertech tuner on my F-150 and the controller went bad so I couldn't put back to factory setting when I sold it. Justin, who owns Black Bear sets up meets in all the big cities for cutom tunes. We did ours in Ft. Worth and 46 people reserved a spot that weekend in a parking lot with nothing but him and his laptop. Do the math 46 x 250 = $11,500.00 not bad for a weekends work. You can also buy a module from him with your factory settings on it if you want to swap out occasionally.
