Fun Trip to the lake today

I got another prop to try out today and called my buddy Mike to meet me at the lake with his GPS, the Scimitar run 68.4 in moderate chop, but when those waves from the wakeboard boats show up I've learned to slow down for them.

My buddy Tom from the prop shop met us out there with a BaJa jet boat with a built up 460cid Ford and a place diverter, he took off alot faster than I could but I went around him in about 200 yards ... I liked that.

Mike took some pic's and a couple video's, I'll get em posted as soon as he gets them to me.

A fellow I met yesterday brought his Beautiful jet boat out too, I thought I'd just race him too, and as you might expect, about the time you think you got something hot someone will show up and put you back in your place, he's running a 468 big block Chevy and hittin 77 mph wot.

Fun Trip

That's what I'm talkin bout Red!! That's one Scimitar for the record books. I bet there isn't another approaching 70mph? I'm sure your dead set on making that 70mph, huh?

You may be Right about that Mark.  My goal was 67mph to begin with, but it would be great to see it go over 70,  I think the only other thing I'll do to it is add the nose cone, if it works like they say it does it will add another mile or two,  we'll see, but I'm tickled for it to be running as good as it is ... I think.

New prop or just have Brian put a little more curl on your prop, lighten the load much as you can, 1/8 tank or less of fuel, point her into the wind and give her hell. I bet you can get 70 out of her.

Way to go Red! That's purty impressive. I'd be tickled too. Congrats! Yeah 50 was my origional goal, but now we're at 54.2 & dreaming of 55? I don't think 70 would be too much of a stretch at all. Go for it!

Most times I agree with Mark but I would NOT add any curl (cup?) to the prop unless you're having trouble keeping it hooked up. I realize our boats are on different ends of the spectrum. But it's been my experience that big diameter & as much pitch as you can swing are the keys to top end. I had some cup added to one of my props & it actually slowed me down!?

Do they make over hub props for that outdrive? That might be an avenue to explore. Another idea: didn't Walt saw the diffuser off one of his props & gain some speed?

Well anyway 68.4 is nothing to be ashamed of. Bet that guy in the Baja went home & kicked the dog/cat/wife ...  Re the guy in the jet boat, well you popped yer own balloon on that one buddy. Ha.

Take care!

I think I can get away eith this here, since he's not on this forum,  but the jet boat did not out run me, in fact, I think I was gaining on him ... biggrin  I was being nice, he said his boat was running 77 mph, and it might,  but it wasn't that day.

He made this statement on our forum yesterday "
hello, red it's the fellow with the jet boat. thanks for the good time last night and you happen to catch me on pump gas only ill be better prepared next time out. gonna be out there on sat if it dont rain come out and come over to party cove on the se side of the lake. we will be there. thank you for comments on my boat as we all know they take alot of blood, sweat, tears and hard earned dollars.. i refer to her as Cubic Dollars racing for the auquaticlly ill. tons of fun hope you make draper a regular!! we need to get out on one of those glass mornings and play and if you want hop in with me! I want the white baja next!!!! wanna run em????? "

It don't bother me a bit to get outrun by that baby .. check out the pic of it.  and a pic Mike took of my speedo

I'm headed out to Party Cove here in a few minutes.

By the way,  I try'd one of the over hub props on the Scimitar the other day,   it was a 15 X 27 chopper .. that was fun at full speed, but Squirly as hell, and it only run 63 / 64 mph, but it was full of air anything but full speed.  I got enough horsepower to turn a little more prop, adding a little cup could increase my speed a little because I can turn it, and I do get air on turns at low speed.  The big diameter prop I was running worked great because the prop was deeper in the water, but now I got to use a smaller diameter,  I've try'd at least 8 props, this one works the best so far, but I did like the way the 23 came out of the hole,  this one is Lazy to get on plane, but Hold On when it does ... lol

Doug, pretty good #'s you have thier. I would guess your boat and motor + necessities would put you at around 900 lbs or 10 lbs per HP a real good ratio. I think I'm about 16 lbs per HP. I'm also guessing with Red's at around 5 lbs per HP, you should be able to find 70 soon.

Thanks Glenn. I have more dang fun with that little boat.

Yeah I was always taught that 10hp/lb was kinda a magic number. 3000lb car w/300hp, 3000lb boat w/300hp, etc. That's when the fun begins?

Yo Red the lazy to plane props'll reward you with best top end. I had one on my 20' Formula years ago that always reminded me of a windmill. Took forever to get it spinning but boy once ya did there was no stopping it.

re. Overhubs. Try something that looks like this?:

When I was searching for a boat I used 10 h.p. per foot of boat as a minimum, based on my 170 h.p. Hammond that was 17 feet.  It was fast enough for me at the time.

I'm glad you had a good trip Red.  Great numbers!

You too Doug, even with the parasail.

Yes, I raised the "X"  dimintion 2.5" and moved the transom back 5", I also changed the angle of the transon from 12 degrees to 8 degree's.  I still got some prop work to get accomplished, and I got a bullet nose going on the gearcase pretty soon, but it's a lot of fun as it is so I'm not in a hurry to get it finished,  well,  maybe just a little.

Hey Red I hadn't realized you'd done such extensive work to the transom. Or maybe I forgot ...  Anyway no wonder you're seeing those kind of #s. That's awesome man.

When I run flat out the trim is ALL the way up & in my opinion could go even higher. 5 deg wedge perhaps? Oh well no matter cuz just when I get her all dialed in & start making some serious #s I get a high temp alarm and/or the chinewalking begins. Sigh.

Yo Tim. You keep making fun of my bimini & I'll sic my ole buddy Terry Curran on you.  And Nancy too ...  Btw the top's been 'chopped' 2" since this pic. (Isn't that enough for you! Sobbing.) Not that your opinion had anything to do with it ...  Ha!

Hey btw to see some vids check out "Uzicanvas" @ youtube.

SeeYa!

Just some friendly ribbing buddy!  There's nothing wrong with having a bimini.  I'll never own a boat without one.  Terry's coming out in about a week.  I'll be camping and boating at Lake McConaughy out West, but hopefully I'll get back in time to catch him Sunday before he leaves.

I hear ya Tim. This time of year especially you really need a bimini. The sun is just brutal. Wouldya believe I went a year & a half or so without one? Phew! What's the old saying ... "The shoemakers kids go barefoot"?

Oh well. Hey lets face it, it's not all that easy making a bimini look good on this type of boat to begin with. In it's present incarnation mine is about 4 1/2 feet off the floor. (Pics soon) I dunno if I'd wanna go much lower. I like it cuz I can stand just in front of it if need be & there's fairly easy access/egress aft. It's 5' long btw. In the down position it stacks neatly on the gunnal 'bout a foot in front of the motor.

I used a lil heavier Sunbrella (9.25oz) on it. Parallel dbl stitch w/Tenara (Gore Tex thread), Xwide center pocket w/reinforced corners, 2" facing down side(s) of top. The reason for this being freestanding tops really aren't designed to go 45-50+ mph. Or more correctly the material isn't. Puts a big smile on my face every time I see somebody haulin a boat down the road with the canvas up, cuz they're just tearing the h*ll outa the seams, etc.

Enough bimini talk, I think Im getting a canvas complex ...  Yeah that Terry Curran sure gets around. (Kinda like the swine flu?) Called me from Niagara Falls last weekend. Have fun camping & boating & take lotsa pics.

SeeYa!
