This is our 1962 Steury w/ 70HP Johnson. We are trying to upgrade a few things and also make a few things "Ship Shape" that time has degraded just a bit. She is really in great shape.
Anyone have a comment on the best trim idea? StingRay's are easy but I discovered a nice item called a 'Smart Tab'. Preloaded trim tabs w/ shock struts that mount on the back of the transom to the outside edge of the gunwale. They promise better holeshot performance without the rudder effect sometimes associated with the StingRay. Any and all comments will be appreicated.
Rainy, rough and wet in the boat is still better than warm, safe and sunny at work.
RE: New Boat on the Block (Well Almost....lolzzzz)
I installed a set of smart tabs on a 16' Stingray a few years ago. It was listing to the port side and would lean while on plane. I had to install a piston with a higher resistance on the port than the starboard. Overall they worked well. They are not trim in the sense of tilt and trim, but more to stabilize and increase bottom surface at the stern for quicker planning.

I LOVE my Stingray! We tried it with, and without, and the difference was night and day getting to plane, although I have a light boat with lots of transom weight, so it is perfect for my application.

Thanks for all the replies on the blog. I went ahead and put on a first generation StingRay and adjusted the manual tilt adjustment on the motor. Seems to work just fine. Rides just a little bow up but that seems best for this size of V-Hull and ride quality.
Another question; My Johnson 70hp outboard starts fine but when we try to take off it seems to bog down and stall. Tried letting it warmup and still same problem. I keep feathering and trying to launch a number of times and for no apparant reason or rhyum she eventually takes off great and continues to run like a top after that. What the h*ll is going on with this? Before I lose what sanity I have left, give me some info please!

If your talking 70's model engines they were designed for Leaded and Ethyl not necissarily high octane. If it has a few miles on it you can try a hotter plug, which if memory serves me right its one number behind the called for plug, ie., R44TS use R43TS. Go to NAPA they have all the cross references and ask the old guy,,that 16 year old only know mpegs and Ipods. Glenn
